The Jupongatana, also known as the Ten Swords, make up Shishio's little assassin group. Brought together in order to take over the world, they make up one of the most lethal and interesting group of killers that the anime world has ever seen. And of course, our beloved Sou is an important member of the Jupongatana as well ^_^ And that is one of the main reasons why this section of Tears in the Rain exists. After all, we can't really know the man until we know who he hangs with, ne? I have to admit that my favorite of them all would have to be Soujirou, and he would be followed by Kamatari and then Yumi *yes I like females with an attitude who can kick some behind* At first I was planning to make this section a lot bigger, but then considering the fact that this is a Soujirou shrine, I figured that it would be best to confine my ramblings to something short and informative. And if you haven't yet seen the Kyoto story arc and don't want to read any major spoilers, I'd suggest not reading further. But if you're anything like myself and thrive on spoilers, then please feel free to go on.

Komagata Yumi
Yumi is Shishio's lover and a former oiran, or courtesan type. She always wears these funky off-the-shoulder kimonos and green lipstick *sigh, what would I give to be able to pull THAT off!* She doesn't do much fighting but she does do some spying for Shishio while leading Kenshin, Sano, and Saitoh through Shishio's little obstacle course. Her relationship with Soujirou is an interesting one. She's always gruff with the "boya" but despite outward appearances she seems to worry about him a lot in a sisterly/motherly manner. She's the first one to notice the change in him during the fight with Kenshin and she comforts him after he loses to Kenshin's ougi. However, Yumi dies by throwing herself in front of Shishio's sword, allowing him to stab Kenshin in their final battle. However, she doesn't regret sacrificing her life for the man she loves and promises him that she'll be one step ahead, waiting for him in hell.

Sadojima Houji
Houji is the brains behind Shishio's network of killers and he doesn't do much hand to hand combat either. However, his organization and business skills are unrivaled and for this reason he's Shishio's right-hand man. Houji is devoted to Shishio's idea of "the strong live, the weak die" and after Shishio dies, he loses his mind and tries to take out himself and everyone else by blowing up Shishio's stronghold. The government tries to convince him to work for them, but he refuses and ends up committing suicide in prison. In my opinion, Houji is probably one of the most devoted members of the Ten Swords, next to Yumi of course, and his devotedness borders on obsession at times.

Honjou Kamatari
Kamatari is the scythe-swinging cross-dresser who is also in love with Shishio. Yes, she's a "he" pretending to be a "she", merely one in a long line of anime cross dressers (Nuriko immediately comes to mind). During the attack on the Aoiya, Kamatari takes on Misao and ends up losing to her and Kaoru, who manages to take Kamatari down with a broken bokken (with some help from Misao's kunai of course). I love Kamatari because he's got a great sense of humor. He flirts with Yahiko, is always friendly with Soujirou, and hates Yumi because she gets Shishio ^_~. Behind that cheery facade, Kamatari is one of the characters that I sympathize with the most. He loves Shishio, but he can't serve him by being the best swordsman nor can he have the same type of relationship with Shishio that Yumi has, so I guess he's stuck in the middle. Poor Kamatari!

Yuukyuzan Anji
Anji is a fallen monk with a tragic past, and one of the few members of Shishio's group who is obviously one of the nicer guys. When he was younger, he lived in a temple with a couple of orphaned little kids. Because their parents were supporters of the old government, the village wasn't able to receive certain privileges from the Meiji government, and as a result some of the villagers got together and burned down the temple, children and all. Upset over not being able to save them, Anji makes it his mission to bring down the Meiji. He first appears when Sano is lost in the woods on his way to Kyoto and ends up teaching him the Futae no Kiwami before either man knows that they're supposed to be enemies ^_^

Sawagejou Chou
Okay, Chou isn't one of my favorite characters in RK, but hey, we're all allowed our preferences right? Nicknamed Katanagari no Chou because of his affinity for sword collecting, he first appears when trying to steal the sword that Kenshin needs to replace his broken sakabatou. Chou is basically a foul-mouthed, broom-headed bad ass type of guy, and is the first member of the Jupongatana to suffer defeat at the hands of Kenshin and his allies. I do so love the scenes with him and Sanosuke trying to kill each other! But for some odd reason Chou is the one who ends up the best off because he gets to work as a cop with Saitoh after Shishio's death. In fact, he's the one who brings the Oniwabanshu and Kenshingumi the news about all the rest of the Jupongatana after the death of Shishio. And he even shows up in the Shimabara arc! Makes you wonder why they didn't bother to bring back Soujirou too, huh?

Uonuma Usui
Usui is one of the more freaky members of the Jupongatana. He wears a blindfold and a turtle shell on his back, and he's blind. However, that doesn't stop him because he can still fight using his "Shin-gan", which allows him to sense the heart rate and physical reactions of his enemy. Of course, he only joined the Jupongatana in order to get revenge on Shishio, who blinded him and almost left him for dead. He gets to face off with the almighty Miburo Saitoh Hajime, and during their fight our wolf ends up taking him down with his secret Zero-stance version of the Gatotsu, which ends up killing him.

Kariwa Henya
I like to think of Henya as Watsuki's own special RK version of Batman. He is able to fly and often carries explosives under his wing, and as a result this makes it difficult of anybody using a sword to fight against him successfully. During the attack on the Aoiya, he gets upset over having to fight Yahiko, and gripes about how he ends up stuck with the baby-sitting job. However, Yahiko's tougher than he looks and manages to imitate Kenshin's sword fighting technique and defeat Henya on his own. After Shishio's defeat, Henya manages to get a job with the government, using his flying skills for observational purposes.

Saizuchi and Fuji
Saizuchi is a tiny old rat-like man who uses his powers to control a giant of a man named Fuji. Though Fuji isn't evil, he's been treated like a monster ever since he was younger, so he definintely has some rage and anger stored up that needs to be vented. As for Saizuchi, I really don't think there's much to him except innate evilness, which is quite rare of Watsuki since most of his bad guys have their own story and past. This duo ends up facing Hiko Seijuro, Kenshin's wickedly cool master and the thirteenth inheritor of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. Hiko successfully encourages Fuji to throw off Saizuchi's control, and as a result manages to defeat them both.

Iwanbo
I'd be the first to admit that there's nothing much to say about Iwanbo. He's basically one of the most underdeveloped characters of Rurouni Kenshin-dom, and we really don't know much about him besides the fact that he's doesn't seem very bright and resembles a giant rubber ball. I've been told that he does have a past, but I really can't say much about it since it involves the Revenge Arc of the RK manga (which I've yet to read). It takes about four of the Oniwabanshu to face him, and even they don't manage to make much of a dent in and he bascially remains uninjured. Once his comrades are defeated, he basically bounces away and is never heard from again.
